PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an initial activation method for a hydrogen storage metal or an alloy capable of sufficiently efficiently performing initial activation of the hydrogen storage metal or the alloy with sufficient reproducibility, and a hydrogenation method capable of increasing a hydrogen absorption amount.
SOLUTION : The initial activation method for the hydrogen storage metal 16 is performed by irradiating the hydrogen storage metal 16 with a plasma of rare gas and activating a surface of the hydrogen storage metal 16. At that time, the density of the plasma is set to 1016/m3-1018/m3. Further, an electronic temperature is preferably 3 eV-10 eV at irradiation of plasma. After the initial activation method of the hydrogen storage metal 16 is performed, the hydrogen storage metal 16 is irradiated with hydrogen plasma to perform injection of hydrogen. At that time, irradiation of the hydrogen plasma is preferably performed under a condition of the temperature of the hydrogen storage metal of 100-300°C.
