DEMULCENT USING RARE ELEMENT GADOLINIUM AND DERIVATIVE THEREOF

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a demulcent using a rare element gadolinium or a derivative thereof as a chemical preventive that protects the liver from the toxic effect of styrene by such a mechanism that gadolinium inhibits the induction of a drug metabolic enzyme in the liver. SOLUTION : In the liver of rat administered with styrene singly, although a significant drop of glutathione and rises of lipid peroxide level and ALT(alanine aminotransferase) and AST(aspartate aminotransferase) activities were seen and a light hepatic injury tendency was recognized, these measurements indicated restoring tendency by postadministration of gadolinium, thus ameliorating the redox state of the liver altered by the styrene. These results indicate that gadolinium inhibits the induction of a drug metabolic enzyme in the liver and therefore is usable as a chemical preventive for protecting the liver from the toxic effect of styrene.
