PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To realize a light source having a high color temperature of 6, 000 to 9, 000(K) and excellent color reproducibility which are required for the light source for a projector.
SOLUTION : Xe at 2 atm or higher at the room temperature, at least one selected from Sc, Dy, Nd, In, and other rare-earth metals, and a metal halide consisting of a zinc halide are enclosed in a discharge space 14 having a tube-wall load of 40(W/cm2) or more. When the metal halide contains a metal bromide of 35(wt.%) or more, and the light source is driven by a rated lamp power of 100(W), a lamp voltage of 30(V), and the tube-wall load of 51(W/cm2); the light source can obtain a lamp efficiency of 45(lm/W), the color temperature of 8, 500(K), and an average color rendering index Ra of 82.
