PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a ceramic material suitably used as a coating film such as a porous thermal barrier coating film on a component intended for use in a harmful thermal environment.
SOLUTION : The coating film material essentially comprises zirconia which is stabilized by at least one rare-earth metal oxide and is further alloyed to contain a limited amount of titania. The rare-earth metal oxides of particular interest are lanthana, ceria, neodymia, europia, gadolinia, erbia, dysprosia and ytterbia, which are used either individually or in combination. Zirconia, rare-earth metal oxide and titania are present in the coating film material in amounts realizing mainly a tetragonal crystal structure. The amount of titania in the coating film is adjusted so that a tetragonal phase is maintained, i.e. a cubic (fluorite-type) phase is avoided, and a higher level of the stabilizer can be achieved.
