The present invention relates to a magnetostrictive material that is represented by Expression 5 : RT w (where, R is at least one kind of rare earth metal, T is at least one kind of transition metal, and w is 1.50 ‰ w ‰ 2.30) and is obtainable by compaction in a magnetic field, the magnetostrictive material having a degree of orientation of a [111] axis thereof in a direction parallel to the magnetic field given by Formula (1) : Degree of orientation = I 222 �¢ ˆ¥ / I 311 �¢ ˆ¥ I 222 �¢ Š¥ / I 311 �¢ Š¥ which is 2.0 or greater (where, each of the I(222) and I(311) represents an X-ray diffraction intensity on a (222) plane and a (311) plane, respectively, and (//) and (Š¥) represent measurements taken on a plane parallel and on a plane vertical, respectively, to a magnetic field orientation in the compaction in the magnetic field). The magnetostrictive materials of the invention exhibit large magnetostriction values, suffer from a small reduction in magnetostriction value over time, do not have cracks, and have high productivity.
