PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve the luminescent performances, stability, and durability by forming an europium phenanthroline complex dispersion ORMOSIL composite material treated with hexamethyldisilazane. SOLUTION : The reaction of a composite material prepared by dispersing a europium phenanthroline complex and an organic dye such as Rhodamine in an inorganic/organic matrix such as an ORMOSIL prepared by a wet sol-gel method is allowed to proceed in an alcohol solution of hexamethyldisilazane or its vapor to convert the silanol groups on the external surface or internal surface of the composite material into trimethylsiloxane groups to improve the stability of the composite material against a water vapor or a solvent. Further, the hydrophobicity treatment effects a decrease in the silanol group concentration, effects a decrease in a rate of the radiationless transition ascribable to the OH group stretching vibration casing the quenching of a rare earth complex and an organic dye molecule, and therefore effects an increase in the luminescent intensity of the composite material.
