PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a ceramic material having high oxide ion conductivity even in a low-temperature range, sufficient mechanical strength and highly dense texture and usable as an oxygen sensor, etc., by using a ceramic composed mainly of oxides consisting of a rare earth element oxide and SiO2 , baked at a specific temperature and containing an apatite crystal structure as the main constituent phase. SOLUTION : This sintered material is composed mainly of (RE2 O3 )x (SiO2 )6 (RE is La, Ce, Pr, Nd or Sm; 3.5=1700 deg.C. The ceramic is produced by mixing raw materials containing the rare earth metal oxide and silicon dioxide at a prescribed ratio, calcining and crushing the mixture and baking the product after forming. The calcination is carried out generally at 1000-1300 deg.C. The baking is preferably carried out at 1700-1900 deg.C on a baking jig composed mainly of a stabilized zirconia sintered material.
