PURPOSE : Provided is a lithium ion secondary battery, which comprises a lithium composite oxide as a cathode active material, and shows improved cycle characteristics during intermittent cycles similar to practical conditions. CONSTITUTION : The lithium ion secondary battery comprises a cathode and an anode capable of lithium ion intercalation/deintercalation and a non-aqueous electrolyte, wherein the cathode comprises active material particles comprising a lithium composite oxide. The lithium composite oxide is represented by the chemical formula of LixM1-yLy02, wherein x ranges from 0.85 to 1.25, y ranges from 0 to 0.5, M is at least one selected from Ni and Co, and L is at least one selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth elements, transition metal elements other than Ni and Co, rare earth metal elements, Group IIIb elements and Group IVb elements. A molybdenum oxide represented by the chemical formula of LiaMoOb(wherein a ranges from 1 to 4, and b ranges from 1 to 6) is present on the surface layer of the active material particles. © KIPO 2007
