The loudspeaker has a voice coil (2) and a permanent magnet (1). The permanent magnet consists of a core (10) made of a highly magnetic alloy including an element from the group of rare earths, and coated in a plastics layer (11). The plastics layer contains particles of an alloy including an element from the group of rare earths. The alloy may be a neodymium alloy. The alloys in the core may be the same as the alloy in the plastics layer. The plastics layer is several tenths of a millimetre thick. An Independent claim is included for a method of manufacturing a permanent magnet for a loudspeaker.
