PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a surface-coated member comprising a high hardness film having a Vickers hardness equal to or above that of the conventional high hardness film, and also having an oxidation starting temperature exhibiting oxidation resistance higher than that of the conventional high hardness film. SOLUTION : A coating layer (2) comprising a composite nitride essentially consisting of Al and at least one kind of element selected from the group consisting of Zr, Hf, Pd, Ir and rare earth elements is formed on a base material (1).
