PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a bulk light emitting substance and its manufacturing method capable of adding an element having an ionic radius larger than that of an element constituting a host crystal, and of controlling an emission spectrum and emission intensity. SOLUTION : There are prepared a single crystal and a solid solution where rare earth elements Ce, Tb, Eu, and Lu are added by 0.5 to 1 mol % to α-Al2O3with a floating zone growing method. Blue colored light is emitted by ultraviolet ray excitation. The bulk light emitting substance is thus yielded, which has an ionic radius of the rare earth element larger than that of the element constituting the host crystal of an oxide material and which has a luminescence center taking the rare earth element as a light emission source.
