PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst capable of retaining the catalytic activity of Pd on a high level over a prolonged period of time and capable of ensuring excellent exhaust gas cleaning performance. SOLUTION : The exhaust gas cleaning catalyst is prepared in such a way that it contains a compound oxide having a perovskite structure represented by the formula ABPdO3(where A is at least one element selected from among rare earth elements essentially including rare earth elements whose valence does not vary from 3 and not including rare earth elements capable of taking valence smaller than 3 and B is at least one element selected from among Al and transition elements other than Co, Pd or the rare earth elements).
