PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a preparation method of a catalyst which is capable of obtaining a catalyst that is supported by catalyst particles consisting of a noble metal and a typical element or rare-earth metal element wherein the catalyst particle has an optimal particle size and uniform composition. SOLUTION : In the preparation method of the catalyst having the catalyst particles consisting of one or two or more kinds of noble metals and one or two or more kinds of the typical elements or the rare-earth metal elements or the oxide thereof supported on a porous carrier composed of a metal oxide or carbon, the method comprises a step (1) of forming a complex containing these elements with the total atom number of 10-500, 000 in one molecule obtained by allowing a water soluble polymeric compound to act on the ions of the noble metal and the ions of the typical element or the rare-earth metal element, thereby causing the coordination bonding, ion bonding or covalent bonding of the noble metal and the typical element, or the rare-earth metal element and the polymeric compound, a step (2) of having the complex supported on the porous carrier and a step (3) of calcining and/or reducing the porous carrier having the composite complex supported.
