PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alkaline storage battery having high discharge characteristics, high cycle characteristics, and high capacity by containing a rare earth-Mg-Ni system hydrogen absorbing alloy having high hydrogen releasing characteristics, high corrosion resistance to an alkaline electrolyte, and high oxidation resistance in a negative electrode. SOLUTION : The alkaline storage battery is equipped with a positive electrode 3, a negative electrode 4, an alkaline electrolyte, and an additive. The composition of the hydrogen absorbing alloy contained in the negative electrode is represented by general formula : ((PrNd)αLN1-α)1-βMgβNiγ-δ-εAlδTε. In the formula, Ln represents at least one kind selected from the group comprising La, Ce, or the like, T represents at least one kind selected from the group comprising V, Nb, or the like, and subscripts α, β, γ, δ, and ε each represents a number satisfying 0.73.
