PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal-halide lamp having high chemical resistance and sealing part reliability. SOLUTION : The metal-halide lamp is equipped with an airtight container consisting of translucent alumina provided with a discharge space portion and a capillary portion, a protection layer consisting of a reaction product of alumina and a rare earth element which is formed at the inner surface of the airtight container, a sealing frit glass which is filled at least in the tip side of the capillary portion of the airtight container, a discharge electrode which is arranged in the discharge space through the capillary portion, and a discharge medium containing metal halide and rare gas which is sealed in the discharge space of the airtight container.
