PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain an alkali storage battery using a hydrogen storage alloy with Mg or the like contained in a rare earth-Ni based hydrogen storage alloy, wherein the alkali storage battery having high capacity per unit volume and a sufficient cycle life is obtained by improving the hydrogen storage alloy. SOLUTION : As the hydrogen storage alloy used for the negative pole of an alkali storage battery, the one expressed by general formula LaxLn1-x-yMgyNiz-a-bAlaMb(wherein, Ln is at least one element selected from rare earth elements excluding La and including Y; M is at least one element selected from V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ga, Zn, Sn, In, Zr, Cu, Si, P and B; and the conditions of 0≤x≤0.80, 020≤y≤0.30, 2.8≤z≤3.9, 0.05≤a, and 0≤b are satisfied), and in which the value of C=(1-x-y)/10+y using the above x, y satisfies the condition of 0.23≤C≤0.27 is used.
