Catalysts for ester interchange reactions of organic carbonates, especially dialkyll carbonates, with aliphatic polyols for the preparation of aliphatic oligocarbonates of mol. wt 500-5000 comprises using organic and inorganic compounds, including salts and complexes, of rare earth metals and/or side group 3 metals, with the exception of Ce, Ce compounds and La hydroxide. It has now been found that the problem of finding catalysts for ester interchange reactions of organic carbonates, especially dialkyl carbonates, with aliphatic polyols for the preparation of aliphatic oligocarbonates of mol. wt 500-5000 can be solved by the use of organic and inorganic compounds, including salts and complexes, of rare earth metals and/or side group 3 metals, with the exception of Ce, Ce compounds and La hydroxide.
