PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal halide lamp capable of reducing starting voltage without reducing a pressure of rare gas for starting to be enclosed in a ceramic light emitting tube even if it is of high wattage. SOLUTION : The metal halide lamp is composed of a pair of electrodes, a ceramic light emitting tube 1 in which metal halide is sealed, a starter 10 for starting the ceramic light emitting tube 1, a proximity conductor 11 arranged so as to contact the ceramic light emitting tube 1, and an external tube bulb 2 housing the ceramic light emitting tube 1, the starter 10, and the proximity conductor 11. The proximity conductor is electrically insulated from the pair of electrodes, and a plurality of wires are arranged between the pair of electrodes along the ceramic light emitting tube 1.
