[docdb]PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To simplify a driving circuit by installing an inverting circuit for on/off converting a first switching element series to a primary coil of an output transformer in a high frequency generating circuit; a driving circuit for selectively giving a self exciting driving signal of an exciting coil generating voltage; and an initial driving circuit. SOLUTION : A rare gas discharge lamp DL has a high frequency generating circuit HC comprising a first switching element S1 connected in series to a primary coil Lp of an output transformer TR connected to a secondary coil Ls; a current detecting circuit R1 series to the first switching element S1; a reversing circuit OS; a driving circuit PDA; an initial driving circuit R2; and a capacitor CA. The driving circuit PDA is composed of a single directional element D1 connected to the winding start end of an exciting coil Le and a resistance R4 series to the element D1. A specified polarity component of different polarity voltage induced at suitable timing in the exciting coil Le during operation is applied to the first switching element S1 as a driving signal to turn on by self excitation.
