PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for manufacturing a Faraday rotator which reduces insertion loss by a heat treatment in the state of forming non-reflection coating films. SOLUTION : The Faraday rotator made by subjecting a thick-film single crystal of the bismuth substituted rare earth iron garnet which is expressed by general formula (R, Bi)3(Fe, M)5O12(where, R denotes several rare earth elements consisting of Tb which is an essential component and Y or other rare earth elements; M denotes Al, Ga or both elements and the amount of M may be zero) and is grown by a liquid phase epitaxial growth process on a garnet single crystal substrate, to mirror surface finishing on both surfaces to form the non-reflection coating films is subjected to the heat treatment in which the atmosphere is gaseous N2or gaseous Ar containing 2.0 to 3.5 vol.% H2and the holding temperature is 460 to 540°C.
