PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in high recording density property and applicable to the storage capacity of 1TB or more. SOLUTION : This recording medium has a non-magnetic support, at least an undercoat layer formed on one surface of the non-magnetic support and including a non-magnetic powder and a binder resin, and at least a magnetic layer including a magnetic powder and a binder resin formed on the undercoat layer. The magnetic powder included in an uppermost magnetic layer of the magnetic layer has substantially a spherical or elliptic shape, and number-average particle diameters of 5 to 50 nm. Rare earth elements mainly exist in an outer layer portion of the magnetic powder, and its core portion contains a Fe16N2 phase in which iron or some of iron is substituted with transition metal elements, and an anisotropic magnetic field distribution of the uppermost layer magnetic layer is 0.51 or less, and its coercive force is 200 to 400 kA/m.
