PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a mercury free arc tube which is excellent in both initial characteristics and performance characteristics by adjusting the heat conductivity of inert gas sealed in a shroud glass tube.
SOLUTION : A mercury free arc tube 12 comprises a mercury free arc tube body 20 comprising a discharge emitter (sealed glass ball) 20a, and a cylindrical shroud glass tube 18 integrally sealed to the arc tube body 20. The inert gas is sealed in the shroud glass tube 18 that encloses the sealed glass ball 20a. In the shroud glass tube 18, the mixed gas is sealed of which the heat conductivity λ (W/mK) at operation is adjusted to satisfy a conditional expression (X+0.42M-12)/160≤λ≤(X+0.32M-6.5)/144, which is considered and validated to meet with both optical flux value and life, for a sealing pressure X (air pressure) of rare gas in the sealed glass ball 20a and a sealing amount M (mg/ml) of metal halide.
