PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To produce a large-sized oxide superconductor excellent in magnetic characteristics and to provide a method for producing the oxide superconductor in good yield. SOLUTION : This method for producing an oxide superconductor comprises carrying out a treatment including a baking treatment of a raw material mixture containing an RE compound (RE is a rare earth element including Y), a Ba compound and a Cu compound in at least a higher temperature region than the melting point of the raw material mixture and producing an RE-Ba-Cu- O-based oxide superconductor. In this case, a material composed of the Ba compound without containing >=50 mol.% of the RE element (RE is the rare earth element including the Y) in an enclosure for coming into direct contact with the raw material mixture in order to support a molded product prepared by molding the raw material mixture is used as the enclosure. Thereby, a reaction with a base is suppressed and the resultant oxide superconductor contains superconducting crystals oriented so as to provide =15 mm thickness composed of the Ba compound.
