A stress luminescent material of characteristic crystal structure capable of unprecedented intense luminescence. There is provided a stress luminescent material having a fundamental structure wherein at least one of alkali metal ion and alkaline earth metal ion, such as Ca ion, is inserted in spaces of a matrix structure formed by bonding of multiple tetrahedral-structure molecules of SiO4 and AlO4 while commonly having oxygen atoms positioned at vertexes of the tetrahedrons thereof, some of the inserted ions substituted with at least one metal ion selected from among rare earth metal ions and transition metal ions providing a luminescence center.
