A luminescent body that has a characteristic crystal structure, exhibiting intense luminescence; and a process for producing the same. Further, there are provided a luminescent body capable of ultraviolet emission and a process for producing the same. A stress luminescent material exhibiting intense luminescence has been developed by the use of a compound having such a structure that alkali metal ions and alkaline earth metal ions are inserted in a matrix structure composed of molecules with a polyhedral structure, some of the ions substituted with ions of any of rare earth metals, transition metals, Group III metals and Group IV metals. Further, a stress luminescent material exhibiting an intense ultraviolet stress luminescence has been developed by adding to the above stress luminescent material any of specified metal ions, such as Ce ion, as a luminescence center.
