PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To achieve superior magnetic property, magnetostrictive property and durability, etc. by optimizing a surface condition of a sintered body used as a magnetostrictive element. SOLUTION : The magnetostrictive element comprises the sintered body including a rare earth element and a transition metal element as composition elements. Surface roughness of the sintered body is 15 μm or less, and a rate of area of a processing strain in the surface of the sintered body is 2% or less. Further average linear density per unit area of priority etching section of grain boundary in the surface of the sintered body is 0.016 (1/μm) or less. To achieve such a surface condition as this on the occasion of etching, etchant is used whose concentration of nitric acid is 2% or less, and average temperature of the etchant is made 10°C or below.
