PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for using a catalyst composed of scandium triflate supported on a polystyrene resin as a dehydration polycondensation catalyst for a diol and a dicarboxylic acid or a hydroxycarboxylic acid, maximizing the characteristic properties of the catalyst supported on a resin, facilitating the recovery and promoting the reuse of the catalyst.
SOLUTION : It has been revealed in a literature that a rare earth metal triflate is an effective catalyst for the polycondensation of a dicarboxylic acid and a diol. The polycondensation reaction is carried out by using the catalyst supported on a polystyrene resin, and the polymerization is proceeded at 120°C to obtain a polyester having a number-average molecular weight of ≥10, 000. The resin-supported catalyst for polyester synthesis can be recovered without using a liquid separation procedure simply by dissolving the polyester in tetrahydrofuran and filtering the solution.
