PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To produce bis(nitrophenyl) carbonates industrially easily at a high yield in the presence of a specific catalyst without use of phosgene having high toxicity. SOLUTION : This production of bis(nitrophenyl) carbonates, which are useful as a material for syntheses of different carbonates, comprises carrying out a reaction of a diaryl carbonate (e.g. diphenyl carbonate) with nitrophenols (e.g. 3- or 4nitrophenol) in the presence of a salt of an alkali metal or rare earth metal at temperature of 50-350 deg.C under reaction pressure of 0.01mmHg to 10kg/cm for 0.1-30hr in such conditions that the anions which constitute the salt may have 1 to more and 7 or less pka of the conjugate acid of the salt in its aqueous solution at 25 deg.C (e.g. inorganic acid ions, such as H2 PO4 , and carboxylic ions, such as HCO2 ), that the salt of an alkali metal may be a carboxylate (CH3 CO2 Na, etc., ) or a dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2 PO4 , etc.), and that the salt of an rare earth metal may be a carboxylate [La(CH3 CO2 )3 , etc.] or a dihydrogen phosphate (LaH2 PO4 , etc.).
