PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for nitriding rare earth-iron based alloy powder by which nitriding treatment is possible in a shorter time compared with the conventional case, and the productivity can be improved and to provide an alloy powder raw material used for the method. SOLUTION : Rare earth-iron based alloy powder (A) containing, as the main constituting components, rare earth elements (one or more kinds selected from lanthanoids including Y) and iron or those elements and M (M is at least one or more kinds selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, W, Al, Si and C) is provided by a method for nitriding rare earth-iron based alloy powder in which heating is performed in a state in which alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal elements (B) composed of 0.001 to 0.1 wt% Li and/or Ca or at least one kind selected from Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Sr and Ba as well as those elements are present at the inside of the rare earth-iron based alloy powder (A) in an atmosphere composed of nitrogen or ammonia or a gaseous mixture of the same and hydrogen.
