PURPOSE : A method for fabricating tin oxide nano-rod is provided to produce tin oxide nano-rod powder with improved sensitivity to gas, thereby employing the tin oxide nano-rod powder in manufacturing gas sensors by precipitating tin oxalate nano-rod material and thermally decomposing the precipitate.
CONSTITUTION : The method comprises the steps of : precipitating tin oxalate in nano-rod form by reacting tin halide compound oxalic acid or derivative thereof in an aqueous reaction medium at 60-100deg.C; and pyrolyzing the tin oxalate precipitate to generate tin oxide powder in nano-rod form at 70-95deg.C. The resulting nano-rod tin oxide powder has particle diameter of 50nm-500nm and aspect ratio of 50-200 and, in addition to, gas sensitivity of 1.5-2.0 based on 50ppm CO at 400deg.C. The nano-rod powder further includes rare metal catalyst particles such as Pd, Pt, Ag or mixture thereof.
