The invention relates to a method for modifying the expression of polypeptides in recombinant expression systems, according to which N-terminal codons in a gene that is to be expressed are replaced by a) synonymous codons and b) codons that are rare for the respective recombinant expression system. The inventive method can be carried out by means of a plurality of different expression systems. The invention further relates to a correspondingly mutated nucleic acid molecule in which N-terminal codons are replaced by synonymous codons and codons that are rare for the respective recombinant expression system, host cells, and a method for expressing the mutated genes.
