PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte battery capable of realizing the nonaqueous electrolyte battery enhancing discharge capacity and charge discharge cycle life. SOLUTION : The negative electrode material for the nonaqueous electrolyte battery has an intermetallic compound represented by general formula (1) as the main phase. RMaSnb (1). Wherein, R represents at least one kind of element selected from rare-earth elements, M represents at least one kind of element selected from a group comprising Co, Ni, Fe, Cu, Mn, V, Ti, and Cr, and the atomic ratio to R is represented by 5.5≤a≤6.5 and 5.5≤b≤6.5.
