PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To make the surface of a magnetostrictive material formed of an alloy essentially consisting of a rare earth element(s) and iron and obtained by a powder metallurgy process hard to be oxidized over a long period.
SOLUTION : A compact is subjected to presintering under the conditions satisfying the pressure of ≤1.33 Pa(10-2Torr) and the temperature of 1, 200 to 1, 400°C, and is thereafter subjected to pressure sintering under the conditions satisfying the pressure of 10 to 150 MPa and the temperature of 1, 100 to 1, 300°C with gaseous argon or gaseous nitrogen as a pressure medium.
