PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium having high magnetic characteristics and excellent recording characteristics compatibly and capable of performing a high density recording, and to provide a magnetic recording device provided with the magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION : The high density magnetic recording medium is provided with a soft magnetic backing layer made of a soft magnetic material, an under layer, a recording layer, a rare earth transition metal alloy layer having a rare earth metal rich composition and a protective layer on a non-magnetic substrate.
