PURPOSE : Glass or glass ceramic having high content of Y2O3 is provided to offer glass products with high refractive index, solubility and thermal stability sufficient for optical purpose and efficiently transfer light from cold light source(LED or radiation lamp) by comprising SiO2, Al2O3 and Y2O3 and containing high level of rare-earth ions.
CONSTITUTION : Glass or glass ceramic includes SiO2, Al2O3 and Y2O3. A relative ratio by weight of Y2O3 to total weight of SiO2, Al2O3 and Y2O3 is at least 0.2, preferably 0.3 and most preferably 0.4. The glass or glass ceramic further contains at least one rare-earth ions in an amount of above 0.1wt.% in terms of oxides, preferably 1wt.% and most preferably 2wt.%. The rare-earth ions are selected from a group consisting of Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er, Tm, Yb, Dy and La. The glass or glass ceramic further contains B2O3. The glass or glass ceramic has a crystalline phase containing partially the rare-earth ions or, in place of the rare-earth ions, yttrium ions precipitated from the glass.
