The invention relates to the use of a material made from a mixed oxyhydride of at least one rare earth and at least one metallic element other than a rare earth, for the catalysis of a partial oxidation reaction of an alkane to give a mixture of H2 and CO at a temperature below 200° C. The invention further relates to fuel cells which may be used at low temperature using said reaction.
