PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium having satisfactory electromagnetic conversion characteristics and excellent corrosion resistance. SOLUTION : In the magnetic recording medium having, on a substrate, a magnetic layer containing magnetic particles and a binder, the magnetic particle has an oxidized coating film having 1 to 4 nm thickness formed on the outer periphery of a single crystal particle consisting of a rare earth-transition metal-semimetal and the single crystal particle has 7 to 12 nm particle diameter.
