PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alkaline storage battery using for a negative electrode a hydrogen storing alloy which contains a rare earth element, Mg, Ni and Al and in which a strength ratio IA/IB of the maximum peak strength IA which appears in a range of 2[!theta!]=31-33° in X-ray diffraction measurement using Cu-Kα beam as a X-ray source to the maximum peak strength IB which appears in a range of 2[!theta!]=40-44° is 0.1 or greater, having improved cycle life by suppressing the dry-out of an alkaline electrolyte in a separator.
SOLUTION : To a first hydrogen storing alloy which contains at least the rare earth element, Mg, Ni and Al and in which a strength ratio IA/IB of the maximum peak strength IA which appears in a range of 2[!theta!]=31-33° in X-ray diffraction measurement using Cu-Kα beam as a X-ray source to the maximum peak strength IB which appears in a range of 2[!theta!]=40-44° is 0.1 or greater, a second hydrogen storing alloy is added which has a Co content more than the first hydrogen storing alloy. It is used for the negative electrode 2 of the alkaline storage battery.
