HYDROGEN ABSORBING ALLOY FOR ALKALINE BATTERY AND ALKALINE BATTERY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve the cycle life of an alkaline battery using a hydrogen absorption alloy containing a rare earth element, Mg, Ni, Al, and Zr , and the intensity ratio IA/IB is not less than 0.1 where IA is maximum peak intensity appearing in a range of 2[!theta!] between 31° and 33°, and IB is maximum peak intensity appearing in a range of 2[!theta!] between 40° and 44° in X-ray diffraction measurment using Cu-Kα as an X-ray source by preventing the detrioration of the hydrogen absorption alloy caused by charging and discharging. SOLUTION : The hydrogen absorption alloy used for the negative pole 2 of the alkaline battery contains at least a rare earth element and Mg, Ni, Al and Zr, and the IA/IB is not less than 0.1 where IA is the maximum peak intensity appeared in a range of 2[!theta!] between 31° and 33°, and IB is the maximum peak intensity of the 2[!theta!] between 40° and 44° in the X-ray diffraction measurement using Cu-Kα line as the X-ray source, and the molar ratio of Zr for the sum total of the rare earth and Zr is in a range of 0.002 to 0.02.
