PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a high quality R1Ba2Cu3O7 needle-like crystal which is free from Ca and contains extremely few defects; and a simple method of producing the same. SOLUTION : The needle-like crystal of an oxide superconductor having a R1Ba2Cu3O7 crystal structure is produced by heat treating a precursor comprising a powder-compacted formed body having an atomic ratio composition expressed by general formula (1) : R1.1-2.4Ba2.1-3.4Cu3X0.2-0.8Ox (wherein, R is one kind of rare earth element selected from Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu; and X is one kind of element selected from Sb, Te, Se, As, S and P) in a temperature range of not lower than 900°C and lower than a temperature at which the precursor is completely melted in an atmosphere containing 5-100% oxygen.
