A rare earth element magnet having a magnet body (10) containing a rare earth element and a protective film (20) formed on the magnet body (10), wherein the protective film (20) comprises a first protective film (21), a second protective film (22) and a third protective film (23) being laminated in this order from the magnet body (10) side, wherein the above films are polycrystalline and are composed of, for example, metal plating films, and wherein the first protective film (21) and the third protective film (23) has an average crystal grain diameter smaller than that of the second protective film (22), and finer crystal grains in the first protective film (21) allow the improvement of the closeness in the interface between the protective film (20) and the magnet body (10), which results in the decrease of the number of pin-holes. The above rare earth element magnet exhibits excellent corrosion resistance.
