PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare-earth-magnesium-based hydrogen occlusion alloy having excellent alkali resistance and also to provide a long-life secondary battery to which the hydrogen occlusion alloy is applied and which is suited to the improvement of volume energy density. SOLUTION : The secondary battery contains hydrogen occlusion alloy particles 36 in a negative electrode plate. The hydrogen occlusion alloy has a composition represented by the general formula : (LaaCebPrcNddAe)1-xMgx(Ni1-yTy)z wherein, A denotes at least one element selected from the group consisting of Pm etc.; T denotes at least one element selected from the group consisting of V etc.; a, b, c, d and e are within the ranges shown by 0≤a≤0.25, 0≤b≤0.2, 0≤c, 0≤d and 0≤e, respectively, and satisfy the relation represented by a+b+c+d+e=1; and x, y and z are within the ranges shown by 0
