PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an algaecide which can effectively prevent algae entirely without considering safety and environmental pollution. SOLUTION : This algaecidal additive contains an orthoferrite comprising at least one rare earth element selected from lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium and yttrium, iron, and oxygen, as a main component. An algaecidal plastic plate contains the algaecidal additive in an amount of ≥5%. An algaecidal coating contains the algaecidal additive in an amount of ≥5%. A method for producing the algaecidal additive comprises mixing ferric oxide with the simple oxide of at least one rare earth element selected from lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium and yttrium, or its compound giving the oxide, when fired, crushing the mixture, firing the crushed mixture to produce a fired product containing an orthoferrite as a main component, and then finely crushing the fired product. Another algaecidal additive contains the oxide of least one rare earth element selected from lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium and yttrium. COPYRIGHT : (C)2006, JPO&NCIPI
