PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To prevent deterioration of photometric properties when dimming a discharge lamp. SOLUTION : A thallium-free metal halide filler for the discharge lamps is provided wherein the filler comprises mixture of mercury and metal halide. The mixture includes sodium iodide, an alkaline earth iodide selected from calcium iodide, strontium iodide, barium iodide, or combinations thereof, and a rare-earth iodide selected from cerium iodide, dysprosium iodide, holmium iodide, thulium iodide, or combinations thereof.
