PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide rare earth-iron-manganese-nitrogen based magnet powder that has a remarkably decreased Fe rich phase, and has an excellent square property, and to provide a method for manufacturing the powder at low cost by a reduction diffusion method.SOLUTION : In the rare earth-iron-manganese-nitrogen based magnet powder containing Mn, N, and the remainder substantially containing Fe or Fe and Co, in which the N content is not less than 3.5% by weight. A phase having a Th2Zn17 type crystalline structure and an amorphous phase are contained, and a coexisting Fe rich phase other than those is reduced in a degree of an intensity ratio (X) of diffraction lines of 10% or less, in powder X-ray diffraction expressed by an equation, X=I(Fe)/Im, wherein I(Fe) is intensity of a diffraction line appeared at 2[!theta!] of 44 to 45° (Cu-Kα), and Im indicates the maximum intensity in diffraction lines of the Th2Zn17 type crystalline structure.
