PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a base material capable of enhancing contrast of the valence change in an irradiated part and a non-irradiated part, in a method for changing the valence of rare earth ions by irradiating the inside of glass wherein rare earth ions are dispersed with converged laser beam; and to provide a method for changing the valence of rare earth ions.
SOLUTION : The rare earth ions are localized into separated phase regions and the concentration of the ions is increased, and further, the valence of a portion or whole of the rare earth ions existing in the separated phase regions or their neighborhood is changed by irradiating the rare earth element-containing glass capable of forming the separated phase regions with the converged laser beam. Thereby, the contrast of the valence change in the laser-irradiated part and the non-irradiated part is enhanced.
