PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an oxynitride phosphor with high emission luminance excited by light within a short wavelength region from near ultraviolet rays to visible light and showing a luminescent color in a range from green to yellow. SOLUTION : The oxynitride phosphors showing a yellowish green luminescent color by the light from an exciting light source in the vicinity of 360-470 nm and represented by the general formula of LXMYOZN[(2/3)X+(4/3)Y-(2/3)Z-α] : R (wherein L is an element of the Group II selected from the group consisting of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Zn, M is an element of the Group IV selected from a group consisting of C, Si, Ge, Sn, Ti and Hf, O is an oxygen atom, N is a nitrogen atom, R is a rare earth metal atom.
