PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a cerium based solid electrolyte in which reduction of cerium under high temperatures is suppressed. SOLUTION : The cerium based solid electrolyte is composed of layers of MCe(1-x)R(x)O(3-α) (M expresses an alkaline earth element, R expresses a rare earth element or Zn, Mn, or In. Furthermore, 0.05≤x≤0.20) is formed on the surface of the cerium based base material. The alkaline earth metal is preferably barium. Thickness of the layer is preferably 0.1 to 50 μm.
