PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a phosphor containing oxides of rare earth metals and of group IIIB metals which is activated by trivalent europium and has improved quantum efficiency.
SOLUTION : The europium-activated phosphor contains oxides of at least a rare earth metal selected from the group consisting of gadolinium, yttrium, lanthanum and a combination thereof, and of at least a group IIIB metal selected from the group consisting of aluminium, galium, indium and a combination thereof. The manufacturing method of such a phosphor comprises a step of adding at least a halogen compound of at least one of metals IIIB into the starting mixture. The method further comprises a step of burning the starting mixture in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. The phosphor manufactured by such a method exhibits improved absorbing property in UV wavelength region and improved quantum efficiency.
