PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an EL element in which comparatively high emission luminance can be obtained and which has little change with passage of time of the variation in the emission luminance and has a good display quality.
SOLUTION : The EL element has a first electrode 22, a first insulating layer 23, a luminous layer 24 including light emitting center, a second insulating layer 25, and a second electrode 26 laminated in the order on an insulating substrate 21, and at least the light extracting side is constituted of an optically transparent material. The luminous layer 24 is a semiconductor of II-IV group or II-III-VI group compound to which a rare earth element is added, and in addition to the rare earth element contained in the luminous layer 24, an iron group element is contained in the range 0.1 to 1, 000 ppm in the luminous layer 24.
